Ionic Liquids
The development of production processes involving sustainable chemistry is a major issue in modern chemical research. Ionic Liquids have physical and chemical properties that are determined by the combination of cations and anions. Merck provides three different qualities of Ionic Liquids according to your needs: for synthesis – suitable for most synthetic work; high-purity for noble metal catalysis, biocatalysis and ultra-pure for electrochemical applications. Merck presently offer more than 300 products and we’re working to make new materials available to the scientific and industrial community. We would be pleased to work with you to select the right Ionic Liquid for your application or to help you develop a new one.
Your benefit: Extraordinary, Innovative, Successful.

Extraordinary potential
The low vapour pressures of Ionic Liquids make them potential substitutes for highly volatile organic solvents, thus reducing the amount of pollution caused through solvent evaporation and their non-flammable nature reduces the risk of fire hazard. They have remarkable dissolution properties for organic and inorganic materials, high thermal and electrochemical stability. Furthermore they are non-volatile, non-flammable and non-explosive. When used as solvents for catalytic reactions, they increase reaction rates, selectivities and yields. They are liquid over a wide temperature range. “Tailoring” of their physical and chemical properties is possible by combination of cations and anions.
Innovative technology
Ionic Liquids represent a new technology with potential for use in sustainable processes as solvent replacements, in catalytic reactions and in electrochemical devices. Their intrinsically conductive nature makes them favoured materials for use in electrochemical technologies, such as electrochemical double-layer capacitors and dye-sensitized solar cells. Merck offers the most diverse portfolio of cations and anions commercially available.
Successful future
Merck has several IP protected and exclusive licences for selected Ionic Liquids. You get chemicals that make exclusive applications possible and therefore bring you in a cutting the edge position. Merck continues to search for new Ionic Liquids and continue working with research networks worldwide to find new applications in order to commercialize them.
Cations
Merck is one of the few suppliers offering you an extensive portfolio of diverse cations. The correct choice of cation is very important because this influences the melting point, viscosity and electrochemical reductive stability. For your individual requirements we offer you a wide portfolio, e.g. 1-Ethyl-3-methylimidazolium cation: choice for low viscous Ionic Liquids or N-Butyl-N-methylpyrrolidinium cation: choice for high electrochemical stable Ionic Liquids. Merck provides you a new generation of task specific cations that enable you to tailor the Ionic Liquids to further improve your applications.
Anions
No matter whether you need bromides or chlorides as starting material, perfluorinated systems or strongly hydrophobic systems – Merck offers you everything your requirements are. The correct choice of anion is very important because this influences the miscibility with water and other solvents, viscosity, as well as thermal and electrochemical oxidative stability. For your individual requirements we offer you a wide portfolio, e.g. the FAP anion (trispentafluoroethyltrifluorophosphate) the most hydrophobic Ionic Liquids reported and hydrolytic stable compared to PF6 or dicyanamide anion, which shows lowest viscosities and good biomass compatibility.
